MHA #16 - Saturday Morning

When Connor awoke that morning it was to two nearly immediate realizations. One was he was lying on the floor by the couch tangled up in his usual blanket. Two was Rex who was sitting on the back of the couch chirping curiously from his perch.

"Awwww Rex, come on just let me sleep a little more" he said trying to pull the covers over his head. Connor vaguely remembered falling asleep on the couch watching a movie with Nick during their sleepover. He must have been tossing and turning like usual and fallen off the couch at some point. Not that it was anything new.

"Nick? You still asleep?" he called out to Nick who he assumed was under the tangle of blankets still on the couch.

Nick giggled as he tried to carry his very large sundae over without spilling anything else, he mostly succeeded except for the trail of chocolate syrup that followed behind him.

“Made it,” he declared as he sat down on the couch next to Connor and sat down.

"Yay" Connor cheered as he lifted the spoon in the air, dripping some of the now melting ice cream on the couch as he did. "This is the most bestest ice cream ever!" he declared again as he went back to eating. "The bananas were a good idea, Nick!"

Nick beamed at that as he took a massive scoop of ice cream and some of it began to dribble down the front of him on the couch, "they're really tasty too and we're having a bal ... bal..." he struggled a bit to get the word out, "healthy breakfast," he settled on instead.

"Right, and bananas have lots of vimmintins and healthy stuff!" Connor said as he shoveled another mouthful of the sundae in.

Rex had finally finished eating what he wanted of the spilled food and flew over to where they were. He landed on the back of the couch between them and gave a small chirp as he tilted his head curiously.

"All done with your breakfast Rex?" Connor asked around a mouthful of bananas.

"Hello Rex," Nick said cheerfully in between his mouthfuls of food, "would you like some sundae? They're really good?"

And then he scooped up a bit of sundae and held it out towards Rex, some whipped cream and sprinkles falling on the couch as he did.

Connor watched as Rex jumped closer and sniffed curiously at the offered bite. He took a small taste and then gave a less than thrilled chirp as he shook his head and backed away.

"Guess that's a no" Connor said then shrugged. "You don't know what you are missing Rex!"

Nick shrugged and went back to eating his sundae, “definitely don’t know what you’re missing out on,” he nodded, “this is the best sundae ever Rex!” he said as if that would change Rex’s mind.

Connor put his attention back to the sundae and kept eating, giving Nick a grin and thumbs up occasionally. It really was an amazing sundae. Just what two young boys needed, a load or processed sugar, before heading out to terrorize... errr explore... the island!

Nick returned that grin and thumbs up and focused on devouring the rest of his sundae, it truly was delicious even if a lot of the sundae was spilling over onto his clothes and the couch and his hair.

It was fine, it was the best sundae ever and yes the perfect fuel that was necessary for all that exploring they were going to do.

When the bowls were finally empty Connor set his down on the couch beside him and leaned back with a contented sigh. "Oh that was the best breakfast I have ever had!"

Nick smiled at that as he licked away the last traces of the sundae, "it really was, I'm glad that we could make sundaes for breakfast, I was never allowed to eat sundaes for breakfast before, they were always a sometimes treat and only for dessert," he made a face at that.

There was a reason for that.

Eh, grownups and their reasons... for everything!

"I was never able to have ice cream for breakfast either! I love this place so much, we can do whatever we want pretty much, how cool is that!?"

Connor shifted and looked over at Nick. "So... I think tomorrow we have to do your birthday party! What do you want to do?"

"I love this place too, there's so much cool stuff here," Nick smiled as he looked over at Rex and then he brightened up considerably at the mention of his birthday, "do you think ... " he hesitated, feeling rather shy all of a sudden, "do you think we could go fossil hunting? I want to see if I can find a tribb....tribo...tribblite," he tried to get the word out.

Connor nodded "Tribbobite" he said matter of factly with a grin. "I'm sure we can try and find one! It will be a lot of fun. I want to try and find a dinosaur fossil. The beach might be a good place to look!"

"Tribbobite," Nick repeated confidently, pleased to have gotten it right, "oh going to the beach to look for fossils will be so much fun and Rex can come with us as well," he added.

What could possible go wrong with that?

"Oh yes! Rex can help us dig up fossils. I'm sure he'd be great at digging!"

Because dragons known for their flying abilities were such good diggers. There was absolutely NOTHING that could go wrong with this plan!

"It's going to be so awesome, with Rex's help we'll find plenty of fossils," Nick said cheerfully because that was totally how it worked right?

His smile widened, "this is going to be the best birthday ever and I'm going to be five years old," Nick held up his hand to show how many fingers that was.

"Cool! My birthday is coming up too! Last day of the month" Connor said. "And I will be six!" which clearly meant he was the one who would be the responsible one, since he was the oldest. There was absolutely no reason to worry about this!

"That is so cool" Nick exclaimed loudly and Rex looked over a little annoyed at how loud the little humans were being right then, "we should make the fossil hunting a joint birthday party," he declared, "I mean its practically your birthday already," he nodded.

"Awesome!" Connor exclaimed loudly causing poor Rex to finally have enough and jump off the couch and scurry off towards the bedroom. "A joint fossil hunting birthday party sounds amazing! We can hang out here today and have our own little party then tomorrow we can spend all day hunting fossils!"

Nick grinned at that, "its going to be the best birthday ever," he declared, "I've never gotten to do fossil hunting for my birthday before," he said, completing ignoring the fact that he'd only had four birthdays prior to this one, "I'm glad that we can celebrate our birthdays together,"

It was four times to miss out on fossils! Anyone would be sad about that!

"I've never been fossil hunting either" Connor said shaking his head. "But I am going to be a .... paleo.. palta... I'm going to hunt for fossils and dinosaurs when I grow up!" he said, the word paleontologist still being a bit of a mouthful, even for an almost six-year-old!

"And it's going to be so much fun sharing our birthday party! I'm glad we both get to do it together too."
